Just back from coastal La Jolla, California where I spoke to UCSD students at the School of Global Policy and Strategy. Thanks to Stephan Haggard and Munseob Lee for the opportunity to discuss my career and the U.S.-Korea relationship. Last month I returned from London and Amsterdam where I raced on the Amstel, rowed on the Thames, and scheduled meetings in between. Once again, I am reminded of the upside of working as an independent consultant and encourage those of you considering this as a second act to get in touch, ask questions, and explore the STARTUP checklist. I would love to help you find a way to tap into maximizing your experiences as I continue to do. Most recently, I completed an initial planning grant with partners Graham Nelson and Chris McKinney at Albion East to research the developing field of AI safety and governance and propose methods to connect international policy makers to experts on the frontier of the AI safety and governance ecosystem. Last month, I kicked off Ambassador Dan Rosenblum’s podcasting career, and discussed The Twenty-Five Year Apprenticeship on The American Diplomat Podcast. 25YA has been an ongoing collaboration intended to share collected knowledge and provide a resource to Foreign Service Officers on diplomatic tradecraft. I had interviewed the founding co-host, Ambassador Pete Romero, for the project several years ago, and it was an honor to join the show with founding co-host Laura Bennett and my friend and former colleague Dan, to discuss my own stories and the people that inspired me. Recent publications include a policy brief published with CSDS on the current status of the US-ROK Alliance, an OpEd published in Dong-A Ilbo on the strength and opportunity of South Korea’s contribution to The Global Fund, and two pieces for GWIKS—one on Coupang Inc. and the other on Nuclear Geoeconomics for the Fiscal Policy Forum (FPF) series. Recent travel included a visit to Eddie Kang’s exhibition at Gana Art in Los Angeles, swim meets in Tampa and Orlando, and participation in a couple great seminars at the Baker Institute while in Houston for CERA week. In Houston I was glad to see a number of former Energy and Resource (ENR) bureau colleagues thriving in new positions and I look forward future collaboration. Thrilled for Bruno to swim and study at University of Pittsburgh. Go Panthers!
